Could be a matter of personal comfort. Maybe you don't feel comfortable sleeping at the in-laws while the privacy of a room at an HJ alleviates that issue.
The HJ I like in particular used to be my hometowns gay bar. There's some nostalgia/lostalgia at play as well.
the privacy thing is insightful tho. I hadn't considered that. :3
