The Tiananmen Square protests started on April 15, 1989. The protests eventually turned into the Tiananmen Square massacre on June 4. Tank Man was photographed on June 5.

I remember watching an interview with the photographer that took that shot and he described how he had to hide the film canister in the hotel room(?) toilet to avoid it being confiscated
