Last week, I returned to St. Pete for Eckerd's Writers in Paradise where I have taught every year since 2006, except for the remote years of '21 and '22. One of my former and best students introduced my reading with a reading in its own right. Oh & he got an agent this week. youtu.be/mSyZTqv23Hs

Tomorrow marks two years since the death of Terry Teachout. It feels like 10 to me. Terry was such a good friend, who took exceptional care of me 2020-2021, when his griefs were so much larger than mine. I talk to him in my head all the time. I suspect hundreds, thousands, feel the same.

Tess Monaghan was a clue on Jeopardy tonight and if you thought I was insufferable before -- well, you were right, I can't be any more insufferable.

Good morning, Baltimore. I'm still here. I got through all of last week. And I'm still here.

Wow, television has gotten so niche that it will renew a show with exactly one audience member (me, just me, I'm pretty sure I'm the only one).

As a parent, I know one has to expect those dreaded late night/early morning "I forgot but I need" statements and I once managed to turn out 3 dozen confetti cookies in 45 minutes, but today's "I need a watermelon for French class" almost broke me.

So Spy mag had this piece back in the day about how the dad in My Three Sons was so clearly an assassin/spy and I really think adulthood for a late boomer is all about finding out who Fred McMurray was in Double Indemnity and The Apartment.

Doing the War and Peace group slow read and 9 days/9 chapters in, just going to conclude that parties used to be a lot better.

Sent a totally random compliment to a writer I know/like today and it's probably the best thing I've done all week.

Newsletter has been released into the world; I don't know how some of y'all do this thrice weekly, I really don't. lauramlippman.substack.com/p/losing-a-s...

Trying to figure out how to rate the last 5 years, but I think I've got it right (from worst to first). 2020 2019 2021 2022 2023

HNY from me and this 25-year-old dress. Close friends will get to see what I'm actually wearing tonight as I am, by choice, solo at home.

I'm in here, too!
Once again got to pick a Dingus of the Year for @lyz.bsky.social’s newsletter and I went with an old (non)favorite, Bill Ackman:

Good morning, Baltimore. "My eyes are vague blue, like the sky, and change all the time; they are indiscriminate but fleeting, entirely specific and disloyal, so that no one trusts me." (Just going to share the good ones from now on.)

Without downloading any new pics, what's your energy going into 2024? (It's better if you can see the teenage kid whose selfie I'm photo-bombing, but we don't put her face on the Internet.)

We've had the traditional Chinese dinner and we're now watching a holiday classic, Hot Fuzz.

My kid has no idea what awaits tomorrow, in part because she never comes downstairs after 8 p.m. because she is upstairs quietly loathing me as all teens must.

I will watch any show with Donal Logue, I would watch a Donal Logue channel, I will happily put together a Donal Logue film festival, really there is nothing I won't watch him in and that includes Jerry Maguire.

Was checking my journal from a year ago -- I had my reasons -- and I was reminded that I told myself I must work on my current book as if it was the most difficult book I'd ever written, which was good advice for . . . .every book.

I know Chevrolet has the best of intentions but helping a family member with dementia isn't just a matter of driving them around in an old car.

During the podcast, Alex, Sarah and I pondered if there could ever be an inverse -- female friends, sitting around talking, men relegated to supporting status, and it was only after I hung up that I thwacked my forehead and said: "Duh, Sex and the City."

Announced at a neighborhood dinner tonight that I have to be on a desert island with one director/writer's body of work I'm going with Billy Wilder and I shall not be dissuaded.
