Hard-bitten mercenaries defending the location their airship crashed down on, forming a defensive perimeter in hostile territory while the sky-boffins scramble to fix the problem and get them airborne again.
A mix of Dark Descent/Last Train Home but with heavy character focus like a Fire Emblem or a Jagged Alliance on the various gobs and you can pick up mercs along the way from other nations
Have the overall story be that they're the Black Company-esque mercenaries hired by The Evil Overlady, who is now dead. And they're now trying to retreat back home with the last of their airships, money, and soldiers, going over country that actively despises them/wants them dead
Honestly I've always thought those GBA Fire Emblems could be modded to allow for you to follow a company of Monster player characters trying to survive a hostile nation until they're Fed The Fuck Up With This Shit.
So this is entirely my jam already.
