There is a new report claiming that observed declines in youth #mentalhealth since 2012 is due to the rise of #socialmedia. I don’t often criticise research online, but given the escalating policy discussions & public concern I think it’s important to unpack this further 🧵 1/9

'Depicting deterministic variables within directed acyclic graphs (DAGs): An aid for identifying & interpreting causal effects involving derived variables and compositional data' Thrilled this has been published in @amjepi.bsky.social! Pls share! academic.oup.com/aje/advance-... #EpiSky

Some exciting news to share! 🎉 I’ve been elected as President of the Public Health Association of Australia (SA Branch). So grateful for the support of the executive committee & outgoing President Prof Jacquie Bowden. Very keen to lead South Australia in public health advocacy for the next 2 years.

Another Q for the #episky & #statsky community… How are we investigating cumulative risk? Say we want to understand how does someone’s risk increase being exposed to risk factor 1, 2 and 3, compared to just risk factor 1 and 2? I’m lost in a rabbit hole & would love some direction 🙏🏼☺️

Who’s on Blue Sky & works at the intersection between #epidemiology and #genomics? Would love to connect and follow people in this space. 😊 #episky #genetics #multiomics

How would you explain to an everyday person the difference between “you’re have an increased odds” vs. “you’re at an increased risk”? OR is much easier to model than RR for non-rare outcomes - but balancing the need for interpratbility. #episky #statsky #oddsratio

📣 New paper published in JAMA Pediatrics this week showing increases in #screentime was associated w/ decreases in early language opportunities among toddlers. We recommend parents opt for educational content or interactive co-viewing if using screens w/ young children. 📺👶🏻 ja.ma/49WgHUq

I’ve been very slack posting on here, but I’m keen to try and connect back in with my #episky #epitwitter #socialepi colleagues around the world. If we don’t know each other, feel free to introduce yourself 👇🏼😊

Wanting to hear #episky thoughts… how do you balance the complex detailed methods needed for causal inference while writing papers for non-epi audience to inform policy/practice? When the researchers & practitioners don’t understand, it feels like peer review & research translation really struggle.
