ARISE (1990) Mixed media - 20" x 20" I took the opportunity with this commission—an album cover for Sepultura—to experiment and have fun. After completing a small stack of tone renderings of textures and distorted faces, I photocopied them, cut them out, and recombined them. 1/3

I then had the assemblage photographed, and a sepia-toned print was made of it in the appropriate dimensions. Using the sepia photoprint as my "underpainting," I finished the painting in my regular acrylic paints. It was an enjoyable excursion into strange territory for me. 2/3

I listened to this on cd a lot back in the ‘90s and, as tradition warrants, stared at this demented cover image trying to make sense of it. And the same with your painting used on Obituary’s “Cause of Death” album. Amazingly, you created the album art for two of the greatest metal releases ever

so cool of you to use almost a collage technique that bands like napalm death used then, biggest respect!

I'm completely floored by how composition is pretty similar but the finished painting is still hugely different from the underpainting!

The B&W was an alternate concept. Sorry, sometimes the accompanying text can be a little misleading.

Sorry for my misunderstanding (I wouldn't have been surprised by you pulling ideas from a photo composite).

Spent a lot of time as a kid gazing at this while listening to it. I turned out totally normal, I promise! 😈
