I have seen more cartoonists stop being cartoonists because the economics couldn't work anymore than I care to actually count. And even more who couldn't make it work enough to get their foot in the door. And that's maybe the most mass reproducible form of art there is. It's depressing as hell.
There's a bevy of posts circulating of famous sculptures with the question of WHY DON'T WE SEE THIS KIND OF TALENT ANYMORE and the answer is you don't support the arts, assholes. Those artists had patrons. They could work all day to perfect their craft without worrying about food and housing.

Everybody deserves to make enough money to make their art.

Was just thinking of jumping ship the other day because I haven't been able to sell a book or get hired for anything in almost two years.😬

I've been thinking about having to get out for as long as I've been in. I've had the same conversation with everyone whose worked with me & whose come up behind me. So I feel like knowing it's not just me has gotten me through a lot & everyone needs to know that.

It certainly does make it feel less antagonizingly personal knowing so many others are in the same boat. But also what the fuck! I'm offended for myself and my colleagues!!

It's easier to deal with and also, yeah, makes me absolutely furious on everyone's behalf.

Buddy I teach a comics drawing course to students who expect the course to teach them what comics are. I’d say its the medium but they seem to have never watched a film either. We can’t get back media being your everything. Maybe we never had it. A world of FM radio.

"How would you ever find something you didn't know existed" is becoming probably the psychological horror future scenario I do not want to watch play out in real time.

Fuck. This one is going to stick with me. My mom and I talked about how I used to make her drive me an hour away to buy import games and like. I have always been insatiable for new ideas. I can’t get in the head of someone who isn’t.

Anyways walked by the old apartment yesterday and was just like mad that I had never walked south from there the whole time. Found a whole new section of the city like it was a Dark Souls zone. I spent too long letting other peoples ways of being trample mine.

I wish I'd had more access to a car in Syracuse because I'll I've done since then is read about things that happened in the 1800s in upstate NY. I used to wander more when it was just paper maps in the car.

Then help support the best political cartoonist working today, Tom Tomorrow. He's here on Bluesky, too.
