Are they called pets because we pet them, or is it called petting because it’s what we do to pets. It’s impossible to ever know.

It's called petting because they're pets, except Marty McFly went back in time and said he was petting a cat and dog and Marvin Shakespeare wrote his cousin about his problem of how to refer to his cat and dog collectively.

Either way, this adds some... interesting connotations to the phrase "heavy petting".

If it's called petting because of what we do to pets, then oh no what are people doing to heavy pets

I have wondered the same thing about lipstick. Is it a stick for lips, or is it called that because it sticks to lips?
