Gotta say that the successive waves of layoffs across American journalism just as the next US election may ultimately lead to a dictatorship is not especially encouraging for the future of that country.
I'm sure making the product noticeably shittier by laying off a bunch of people will solve readership growth problems. Totally makes sense.

"..focus on strengthening the outlet's journalism.." <-- I guess the implication, in a statement by the owner (a doctor & biotech billionaire), is that the laid-off workers were dead weight.
