I thought someone shooting a candidate was automatically part of just about every definition of terrorism.

Quite the reverse. Terrorism targets populations, not individuals.

Surely by definition assassination and terrorism are two entirely different things. Assassination targets particular individuals for a particular purpose, terrorism is indiscriminate with regard to targets, because the goal is to create fear in a population.

Philosophically I suppose you could make an argument that assassinating a leader terrorizes their followers, but that’s armchair hair-splitting.

Gotta love government euphemisms. Secret Service "neutralized " the shooter. Now they are trying to determine his motive. Maybe if they hadn't KILLED him, they could have asked questions.
