Almost every single one of theee vehicles gumming up the rideshare pickup area at JFK Terminal 1 are private vehicles, not TLC vehicles whose riders pay a fee to access the airport. This is exactly why we should charge drivers $8.50 to use JFK’s roadways and make the AirTrain free.

Every large airport pickup right now is insane because cities/airports refuse to fund keeping people from effectively parking in Arrivals.

It’s absolutely bonkers. Every single vehicle curbside here hasn’t moved since I got here 10 minutes ago, some are entirely shut off, one is even unoccupied (!), and a Port Authority cop walked by and did absolutely nothing.

I should note I've never experienced this at home in Chicago, but may not be looking as closely.... But was just in Boston and it was the same.

Funny enough, I’ve never taken a rideshare or even private vehicle from BOS precisely because the Silver Line from the airport is free!

same for Chicago. I *usually* take the train, but times I've taken a cab/ride-share, I've never witnessed any congestion (to be fair, same for LGA recently). Legit took us 30 minutes to get OUT of BOS in a car.

At ORD the cops are hyper aggressive about idling. Those cars would be at the pound in less than 10.

Both the airport in Houston and Tampa has security that would make you move after 5 minutes in the drop off and you only had 2 minutes in pickup before they told you to move

LAX has a shuttle to a lot set up for ride share pickup instead of in Arrivals.

Which does something worse: it encourages people to rely on private vehicles for rides. So that vehicle is mostly empty in one direction, whereas a rideshare vehicle can, in theory, be full of passengers both to and from the airport. (On the bright side, at least the new APM will be free!)

Well if it didn't take 1-2.5 hours to get to JFK from Manhattan/NNJ maybe so many people wouldn't drive. The MTA & Port Authority are also to blame here. & I want congestion pricing as much as anyone. But they create these crises by building cool whalebone stations instead of fixing service.
Avatar
Huh? It’s a 45-minute trip from Grand Central or Penn Station via LIRR and the AirTrain.

LOL. Are you serious? Who lives in midtown?

Wait until you see how long it takes to get from Manhattan to JFK Airport by car at rush hour.
Avatar
Come on bruh now you're just defending the MTA shenanigans. I hate cars as much as the next Manhattanite
Avatar
Not sure what you're talking about. What MTA shenanigans? The main reason we don't have direct transit access to the airports is because the Port Authority runs their own little fiefdom.
