The string of horrible furry media coverage in the early 2000s didn't exist in a vacuum. It was part of a massive post-9/11 push for jingoism and "normalcy" on TV. So everybody "different" or "marginal" would be portrayed as a villain or be made the target of mockery. Hence furry marginalization.

It is pretty interesting to look at the kind of information people in the fandom (and everywhere else, really) used to be comfortable with putting out there for everybody else to see. Very different from today.
What I find SUPER WILD about early Furry Fanzines is how the fanzine contributors would ACTUALLY LIST THEIR REAL LIFE ADDRESSES at the bottom of their contributions! Something NOBODY in their sane mind would even consider doing nowadays because of doxxing! (I censored it, because duh)

archive.org/details/shaw... "Shawn Keller's Horrifying look at the furries" was a pretty disgusting and , quite frankly, libelous piece of crap comic book where Keller would attack real members of the fandom by depicting them en masse as sex predators, perverts, and deranged manchildren.

I built an entirely custom, furry as fuck pinball machine. It was a nightmare project and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone, but I will slowly document some of the build here TierFest, because the animals want to get drunk too

Compilation of TERRIBLE fursuits seen on TV during the early-2000s media obsession with furries.

"The fursuit of happiness" was an article that appeared in the April 12, 2001 issue of the Montreal Mirror. It TRIED ("tried" being the key word here) to give a more balanced view of furries as a fandom. But inevitably circled back to obsessing over how we strange freaky people had sex.

I'm not going to post this kind of thing often, but... Pro tip : It's generally seen as horribly insensitive and trashy by polite society to name drop a recently deceased person to win points in a petty internet argument.

The Freezing Furs were a (now defunct) group that was founded in response to the Burned Furs. They believed (rightly so) that Burned Furs were a hate group seeking to rally support for a "cleansing" of the furry fandom by dehumanizing and discounting folks that had been part of it from the start.

Extremely sad news this morning. It appears that Mark Merlino has passed away during the night. We want to give his surviving family and friends our sincerest condolences.
He's gone.

Update on this situation. Apparently, Mark is NOT doing well and is being transitioned into end-of-life care. Which, as you know, can be VERY costly. So any help is more important now than ever.

Not vintage furry stuff, but likely relevant to people here: Oklahoma republicans are passing a bill that would make it illegal for children to "attend school as furries". Not only that, but a child could potentially be removed from school by ANIMAL CONTROL. All that because of LibsOfTiktok lies.

In the mid 2010s, Jagermeister ran a series of adverts using bizarrely horny-on-main furry imagery. (Don't ask me why the stag guy has a very visible and detailed bulge on an officially alcoholic beverage advert, I have no idea either)

In 2022, Dick Tracy had a storyline taking place at a furry convention taking place in Chicago called Fanfur (alternate universe MFF, clearly). He meets with a staff member called "Eric Greymuzzle" about a dastardly fake animation cell ring.

I thought this would be relevant to people following this account: Mark Merlino suffered two small strokes and had to be hospitalized over new year's eve weekend. You can send your good words and positive vibes in the post below.
I guess I can tell people now. SySable (Mark) has had 2 small strokes. He's at Memorial Care in Fountain Valley (CA) waiting for his cardiologists to show up. Worst thing is he's got to spend Xmas Eve alone in a hospital bed. Good thoughts and good vibes his way would be very appreciated. Blessed be

It's really kind of crazy to think that furries' addresses and personal information was just being published so openly in those days: (Page censored for obvious reasons)
"FurVersion" was one of the earliest furry-specific fanzines, published by Karl Maurer from May 1987 to November 1990. It began as a simple list of names and addresses to enable Furry fans to contact each other. By issue #3 it began including art and fiction.
