a leader of Burkina Faso, Sankara, said w/r/t aid, "[Don't send us food], but give us your best seeds, tractors, pesticides, & fertilizer." give mosquito nets to fishermen, they've been dealing with malaria but damn hunger hurts worse, using the net for fishing is a rational choice

In another example, Facebook, Google, even Musk all claimed they could connect the remaining 2 billion people not on the internet. Facebook and Google provided insane ideas like drones and helium balloons. Huawei meanwhile just sold normal cell phone towers cheap. Guess who won?

People don't want to be condescended to with a baby machine that can't be used for immediate needs. Meanwhile Huawei is selling normal looking devices and infrastructure, a phone that looks just like everyone else's for less than a hundo and on the Android ecosystem.

one thing i also remembered seeing was during the Battle of Mosul, an Iraqi commander was wearing a Chinese SKS ammo rig, but instead of bullets, he had a cheap Chinese cell phone in each pocket, labeled for each of his units.

There're bazaars in China filled with local fixers from everywhere from Poland to Tanzania to Chile. If you're a local cell provider and they can help you send a shipping container of phones and flatpack tower to your nation. Facebook, Starlink, Google, won't do that for you.

The retrospective book on the OLPC is such a damning review of the project. They insisted on making this stupid plastic shit and shipping it to classrooms where the teachers didn’t want them and didn’t know what to do with the distracted kids. And people still fawn over this waste of time!
