Maybe I’m totally old fashioned but I still believe in the university as a space to think deeply & slowly & carefully abt difficult issues, together w/our students & in conversations across difference—thus it makes me so very sad when outsiders use campuses as staging grounds for polarizing debates

Reading through the copy-edited file of my book manuscript, I am struck by how many times I thank friends and colleagues for various references. It truly takes a community to produce scholarship. And the more we talk to one another, the better our work becomes.

Today in academic writing: I wrote a note to my copy editor explaining that I was rejecting a proposed edit because it ruined a pun.
