Happy #ToriiTuesday! I’m deep in the pre-vacay work blitz, so here’s a quick #torii post! I recently discovered that I missed an unusual material from my earlier series: BAMBOO! ⛩️🎋 That’s right, it’s the take-torii! Photos from Kamiya Inari Shrine in Hyogo Pref & Suehiro Shrine in Kyoto

An interesting fan painting from the Qing Dynasty, titled "The Picture of Beauty("Pink Lady") & Skeletons". One side is a maid painting, with a group of women chatting leisurely and comfortably. The other side is a skeleton perspective of them.

I read 1591 (¿) but apart from a fab watermark... it's the classic letter-fold that I finf captivating Any thought ? @dbellingradt.bsky.social

my understanding of a one sheet folded letter (a little exaggerated here) forming its own envelope: 1) fold length-wise in 3 at a slight angle 2) fold cross-wise in 3 so that middle will overlap 3) tuck in narrower fold so that it will fit snugly into opposite wider fold ✉️ @dbellingradt.bsky.social

What you don't see here is that the embossed value went from .40 cents in 1878 To 5Fr.50c. In 1879 [Again apologies for the temp. Whitetack which you can see] This is where a paper collector's fascination with watermarks turns to historical source... ¿ @dbellingradt.bsky.social

This is just a reminder that, in 1631, Robert Barker in London misprinted a famous line of the Holy Bible, namely „Thou shalt commit adultery“. The forbidden copies with the famous slip sold well, and a few survived in our catalogues. The edition was called the Wicked Bible afterwards. #bookhistory

Picking up from where I left off yesterday. Before anything else, you should know that you can access all of my scans of these books (~100 years old, def public domain) here drive.google.com/drive/folder... Mixed scan quality & enjoy my nail polish color, but they all should be readable. 5/
(augh, vol 4 in above post, not vol 3) Ok but what about the patriotism? Well, vols 1-4, according to the teaching notes at the start of each volume, focused on home and school. Vols 5-8 begin introducing concepts related to society and the nation, but only as appropriate for girls. 4/

Distinct upside of hiring a copy editor for my manuscript who knows Chinese is how they have caught a good number of pinyin errors caused by my southern accent speaking self not really knowing when something is -n or -ng, or z- or zh-.

It is common knowledge (in the ether beyond BlueSky) that when Wang Wei 王維 (699—761) took up the brush again he did so after a hiatus of some 850+ years, having lain his brush aside in c. 130 BCE as Marcus Pacuvius (220—c. 130 BCE) 📌Thought-spoiler: 【both were equally esteemed as painters—&—poets‼️】

Does anyone know which ancient Chinese philosopher admonished people not to pollute their own wells? I have a vague memory it was pre 3rd C. bce

For a while, back in FR, I had a poetry/criticism corner, and in memoriam of the famed (if fictive) Sinologist Herr Doktor Peter Kien and Therese I turned the books around. To no avail friends love to mock my atrocious memory and ask for a title, or author, or point to a book and say what's that?

I hope you are all as happy as I am with these emails from a UK-based "publication agency" that offers to "crafting an article centered on your recent paper, highlighting its key aspects", wanting money from you, and maybe create a video about your research.
