In a small act of analogue rebellion*, I have begun sketching and sending postcards. If you’d like a home-printed or hand-sketched card, drop me a DM. They may arrive battered, creased, or years late… but that’s all part of the fun. *yes, I’m aware of the irony of posting this online

Train sketches on the way home from a brilliant weekend in Leeds. The owl from Leeds Civic Hall, and Danni Wyatt on the charge for England at Headingley. I love sketching on the move - it forces looser lines and fast work.

Went to the Medieval Settlement Research Group Spring Conference yesterday. Fab day of interdisciplinary delights. 🏺

A live sketch from another excellent Wednesday Leicester archaeology seminar by Dr Christina Tsoraki, on deposition within Neolithic houses at Çatalhöyük. 🏺

Got to see the unique Mesolithic/early Neolithic sculptures c.7000BCE from Lepanski Vir at the National Museum of Serbia today. An incredible artistic effort, really ancient yet really modern, and 100% insomnia-inducing

So, it's the first day of the cricket season, Worcestershire are going well in the derby at Edgbaston, and on the very fine BBC commentary @melindafarrell.bsky.social is doing a marvellous job of promoting the industrial heritage of Birmingham and the Black Country. My worlds collide!

Work in progress: first sketch for a design based on a medieval floor tile found in a Worcestershire barn a decade ago. It’s lived in my head ever since. The medieval tiler saw crowns of blue cornflowers in fields of ripening wheat, and captured them in this startlingly modern-looking pattern.

For International Women’s Day, here’s a comic about one of my archaeological heroines. Kathleen Kenyon, her work in Leicester, and the efforts of archaeologists in the city to commemorate her. 🏺 You can view/print/download as a slideshow here: incurablearchaeologist.wordpress.com/2023/03/28/k...

Happy St Piran’s Day! Here’s a page from my Cornwall sketchbook archives: the settling tanks at Wheal Martyn China Clay works, near St Austell. Brilliant museum, well worth a visit.

Plus, I’ll send a little piece of original artwork to the first person who can answer this teaser: what links this handaxe, found in Suffolk in 1797, to the world-famous #Palaeolithic site at Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania? 🏺
Free postage this weekend on my Teemill store. Grab some new designs, including this illustration of one of the famous Hoxne handaxes. 🏺 incurablearchaeologist.teemill.com

Normalise lurching into 2024 with the energy of the Corinium Cockerel. There’s a poignant story behind this wild-eyed fellow. It was found in a 2nd century infant burial in Cirencester in 2011. Cockerels were associated with the god Mercury, whose roles included ferrying souls to the afterlife. 🏺

I’m delighted to say that (thanks to the space afforded by a brief TAG tech-delay!), Prof Oliver Harris is now on Bluesky: @ojth.bsky.social Ollie is one of the most creative, original and—above all—generous scholars in archaeology today. And he has a new book, which I cannot wait to read!

ClimateTAG at the UEA was every bit as inspiring, challenging, fun and downright weird as I could have hoped. Art and archaeology colliding and throwing off sparks. Do check out the Sainsbury Centre, an astonishing place doing remarkable things. 🏺

Hello Bluesky! I’ve been avoiding social media for a while, but this feels the sort of place I could feel comfortable, even if I don’t yet understand all its quirks. I’m Rob. I do freelance artefact analysis and illustration, and I’m doing a PhD on the medieval Severn Valley. 🏺
End of feed.
