Thank you Minneapolis for a Better Police Contract for your presentation at our public hearing last night! We have so many amazing experts in our city and it's been a priority for me to put that community expertise front and center at City Hall. ๐Ÿงต

In 2020, Mayor Frey described the MPD contract as a "nearly impenetrable barrierโ€ to disciplining cops like Derek Chauvin. If Mayor Frey wants to move forward with a 21% raise for MPD, our communities need to see the robust reforms that we've been promised for years in return.

The proposed raises will put starting pay for MPD above New York City and Los Angeles. To cover the $9 million in raises, Mayor Frey has proposed defunding community safety by cutting transit safety, hate crime prevention and other neighborhood safety programs.

As Administration and Enterprise Oversight (AEO) Committee Chair, I have spent the past month working with my colleagues and city staff on crafting a timeline that will allow for ample discussion and community engagement around this contract.

The proposed MPD contract will significantly impact all our communities in terms of financial cost, public safety and accountability. Residents deserve ample time to review, discuss and provide feedback before any final vote by City Council.

We held our first public hearing on the proposed MPD contract last night. We'll hear from additional community groups and public comment on July 8th at 1:30pm. City Council will take a final vote on the proposed MPD union contract on July 18.
