The 1997 treaty that gave Russia most of the Black Sea Fleet plus basing rights in Sevastopol is a key permissive cause of Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea and its 2022 invasion. Ukraine partially forcing out Russia's fleet is hugely significant strategically and symbolically.

Key point that too many people seem to forget: "Ukraine is fighting a medium- to long-term war on multiple fronts against a significantly larger and heavily entrenched foe." Their successes are all the more remarkable for that. Now we must send them everything they need to finish this war asap.
