so anyway the Mrs tried to donate yesterday. Couldn't book online (system overload), so turned up at a centre. Was turned away - completely full of donors.

The system is set up for regular donations, booked up well in advance and usually full; to have excess capacity for ad-hoc donation would be more costly. Please keep trying, though - previously they've added emergency sessions but that may take some time.
