I think he was elected. That's the most worrying part. His party was the largest party in the Reichtag which made him chancellor.

He wasn’t immediately appointed chancellor. 2 others failed, economics were shakey, then Hindenburg appointed Hitler. He didn’t even win the popular vote. Highest percentage was 37%. He then passed & did away with “inconvenient laws,” & started with jailing his opposition.

Yeah, it was an unstable parliamentary system, which are usually pretty stable, but it gets ugly when they're destabilized.

That was the democratic system in Germany at the time. His party was the largest in the Reichtag. Similar to UK's system where we have a party that enjoys 100% of the power with only 29% of the electorate. We're now on our 5th appointed Prime minister in past 14 years.
