Sixty years ago today, three civil rights workers - James Cheney, Andrew Goodman, and Michael Schwerner - were murdered near Philadelphia, MS, during Freedom Summer. They were helping Black residents register to vote.

Sixteen years later, Ronald Reagan, in his first campaign stop in Philadelphia, spat on their sacrifice and on the cause of civil rights, declaring his support for “states’ rights.” The Republican swing to race-baiting was in full poisonous flower, leading to where we are today.
