Yes! There's so much cognitive dissonance that people have to deal with, and many of them seem to simply bury the bits that don't fit their worldview. But I'd like to think that for many it can be resurrected by a trigger, like an event that can't be ignored. Or that it has a cumulative effect.
The good news: this is the level of “bad” that general decency is up against. Could be much more conniving/reticent.
The bad news: this is the level and no clear path to victory is in sight.
