New social account, new paper! We explored Hawaiian mesophotic reefs with tech diving and eDNA and found strong depth-based biodiversity zonation, with community breaks at ~45–60 m across the tree of life. (not OA but ask me for a PDF if you need to) doi.org/10.1111/mec....

As an academic in a very different field, can I ask: is studying Hawaiian coral reefs as dreamy as it sounds to an outsider? Or does academic drudgery suck the fun out of it? Trying to figure out how badly I screwed up picking fields.

It’s got its ups & downs but I’d say the dreaminess largely outweighs the drudgery.
