#OTD in 1992, Space Shuttle orbiter Endeavour lifted off on its maiden voyage. Later in the mission, to recover a satellite that had failed to reach its intended orbit, Pierre Thuot, Richard Hieb, and Thomas Akers performed the first, and to this day, the only three-person spacewalk.

#OTD in 1961, Alan Shepard launched atop a Redstone rocket in his Mercury spacecraft Freedom 7 on a 15-minute suborbital flight, becoming the first American in space. Shepard would later become the only Mercury astronaut to walk on the Moon, as commander of Apollo 14 in 1971.

#OTD in 1970, the crew of Apollo 13 splashed down in the Pacific Ocean. The mission would be termed a "successful failure," in that they could not accomplish a landing on the Moon, but the crew did make a safe return to Earth, due to the efforts of hundreds, if not thousands, on the ground.

#OTD in 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first human to orbit the Earth; and on this date in 1981, John Young and Robert Crippen lifted off on the first mission of the Space Shuttle Program, aboard the orbiter Columbia.
