I'd been curious about this for some time, and I think it may just be that in some circles he's seen as the "pro gun leftist" and I guess that this extends to people seeing him as a centre-left reformist type.

Once you realise his bio is meant as an endorsement of liberal democracy in a Jeffersonian "protect themselves from tyranny" way, it snaps into place.
