30 years ago at this moment I was in a radio studio wrapping up a show, about to start my Saturday night. The time was 18:50, there was 10 minutes left in my shift. The hot line rang. “Something just happened at the airport. I think there’s a plane down on Wallace Neel Road”

At 6:42 on the 2nd of July 1994, a USAir DC-9 bound for Charlotte from Columbia, SC encountered a powerful thunderstorm on final approach. A very powerful downdraft struck the plane, the pilots attempted to go around, the jet lost altitude and crashed in a residential neighborhood.

Of the 57 people on board, 37 died and 20 survived, including the crew of 5. I stayed & helped for a few hours. I don’t follow the news as much as I did back then. The plane crash was awful. It was an awful night.
