So many of the actors in The Outsiders musical—opening on Broadway tonight—blew me away. Particularly Joshua Boone (Dallas) & Brent Comer (Darrel), two nuanced performances and visceral voices, among many, that will stick with me for awhile. But the show itself left me with mixed feelings 🧵
I wish Broadway had more space to take big swings and make weirder, bolder choices: centering a different character? ending things dramatically after a particular accident and left audiences to sit with that? or narrowing & deepening the focus to more specific characters and their relationships?
That’s the stuff I miss most about the live theater scene I originally fell in love with: different perspectives and more surprises than the book > film > Broadway pipeline.
It was also not lost on me that a book and references set in 1967 and a movie from 1983 probably cater to the generations most likely to afford Broadway tickets these days. And I probably need to seek out the more weird warehouse shows looking for love and audiences!
