I wonder if there's something about the existence of ethnically-defined nation-states as the primary units of global political order that inherently favors the far right in the long run. Actually, I more suspect than wonder. Or rather: believe. Nation-states are bad.
Alisdair MacIntyre once said that being asked to die for the modern state is like being asked to die for the phone company. I assume he meant that as a critique of the state, but I take it as an indication that states should become more like the phone company.
The USSR was right in its handling of the national question, until Gorbachev came around and intentionally fomented nationalism. Also, the EU is right to undermine national sovereignty (though not right in its overall policy direction).
