Obviously everyone's situation is different, but: - if possible, consider living in a place where you can commute or accomplish some errands on transit/bike/foot - if you're a two+ car household, see if you can get away with one fewer - get a sedan instead of an suv or pickup truck

- drive conscientiously. obey speed limits and drive slowly and attentively in areas where there might be a lot of pedestrians or bikes, such as downtown. learn where your city's major bike routes are and pay close attention when you're near them.

- accomplish tasks where cars are necessary with other people. go grocery shopping with your friends. if your job has a consistent schedule, ask the colleagues you can stand where they live and try to work out if carpooling makes sense. - combine trips. do multiple errands at once.

- unless you're extremely poor, pay for parking instead of endlessly circling the block looking for a space. don't go miles out of your way to save three cents a gallon on gas. drive less by valuing your time.

- stay informed about what's going on in your city. if there's an infrastructure project that will help one of your friends do something without a car, tell them about it. voting in local elections matters far more than voting in national ones.
