I just finished my transit easel and I can’t wait to use it! My social media handle is inscribed on the tray so when people take pictures they’ll be able to find me on social media afterwards. Lots of fun to design and build! #pleinair #diy #3DPrinting #craft

I think this is the largest gooseberry harvest we’ve had! Into a pie they go with homegrown strawberries!

Black raspberry season is here! My favorite!

This is might be my first installation piece! Designed to help liven up and bring some color to a drab hallway, the pattern of the 3D printed panels is based on stained glass throughout the building. A fun little side project, it's nice to have my work out there for people to experience. #3Dprinting

I am so sick of AI being put everywhere, in so many unnecessary places. I wish I could opt out of a majority of it. It's not free - there is an electrical and environmental cost to AI.

I made a lucky rabbit’s foot for our #microCT lab! Thanks to MorphoSource, the UMMZ, Roger Benson, and Cody Thompson for making the CT data available to researchers and artists! #3Dprinting

Just finished The Feather Thief and I'm not sure if it's more upsetting that those specimens were destroyed or that many of the people didn't understand or care how important specimens and museums are for science.

Round two with the vinegar and salt patina! This time, I experimented with a copper and PLA composite and I got not one, but three distinct patina phases! There's the familiar turquoise from the bronze, joined by a lighter turquoise in one of the basins, and a truly stunning, vibrant lapis blue!

Experimenting with hot patina on a 3D printed beaver tooth! This is printed in bronze & PLA composite, heated with a torch, and treated with copper nitrate. While some melting occurred, the effect is quite interesting!

Ready to go places! What I really want is to share these pieces with people. They are so much more interesting in person - photos just doesn’t capture the light adequately. If you know of a venue that might be interested in hosting these pieces or open calls for art, I’d love to hear about it!

Why are office-type printers (2D ink printers) cursed objects? They always have issues. 3D printers are way easier by comparison, which feels backwards.

I always enjoy doing traditional art at the Field Museum. It feels a like spending time with an old friend - no matter how long it's been, I know I'll have an engaging and enjoyable time. The focus for this piece was to prioritize value over color, to loosen up a bit, and ultimately to have fun!

Aren't the swirls of this cribriform plate beautiful! And also makes it tricky to print, lol. The cribriform plate is the interface between the brain and back of the nose where the olfactory receptors are located. I've got plans to build some LEDs into this piece so stay tuned! 🐡

Yay! Looking forward to it!
I’m excited for the upcoming publication of our paper summarizing the lessons learned from seven years of specimen digitization. The oVert project has produced tens of thousands of datasets and is changing the way people view and use collections.

This was an experiment with vinegar and salt patina on bronze. It’s interesting, but it didn’t turn out how I expected. The oxidation does have a lovely sparkle though! Should I keep it this way or return it to its original bronze luster? 🐡

I’ve been wanting to experiment with Protopasta’s bronze filament for a long time! This is a scaled up unerupted 4th opossum molar. At 1st I hoped the layer lines wouldn’t show, but after polishing I think I like them. What do you think, are the layer lines distracting or interesting? 🐡

Happy Throwback Thursday! Here are some concept art and subsequent rough model from a Maya class I took in grad school. I'm still pleased with that concept art - I was trying out a different style. Maybe I should revisit that technique?

Loving these material mashups! This one uses Hatchbox’s wood filament and Prusament’s PLA Marble. The natural materials work so well together, but the wood filament definitely needs more of wood grain modeled into it to look convincing. Do you enjoy seeing these little experiments?

I recently heard the term Solarpunk and now I'm obsessed! It combines multiple aesthetics, ideas, and movements that I love. If you are unfamiliar with solarpunk as I was, I'll attempt to summarize. Solarpunk envisions a future where communities utilize the best parts of technology, (1/4)

Having fun experimenting with multimaterial printing! Used clear filament embedded in opaque to see how light moves through it. Unfortunately, not as far as hoped. However, I was afraid the 3 sections might fall apart, but they held together! 2 unexpected results, but valuable lessons going forward.

Hey #3DPrinting folks! Do you want to repurpose your desiccant packets for filament storage? They tend to arrive damp so I designed this basket to use in a filament dryer. And I got to play around with voronoi modeling! To print it yourself, download the STL from my Thingiverse (Link in profile).

Went to the artist meetup at the Field Museum! I chose this specimen because of its challenges: the pose, the foreshortening, and the fact that almost all the pigment had faded from it. It's common for pigments to fade, which is why I like to use photo reference of a living animal. 🐡

Ahoy! I've been busy calibrating my print settings and learning about filament flow and k-value. I'm excited to get to my art projects, but taking the time to learn these important skills now will pay off in the long run. In the meantime, anyone need a toy boat? 😆 #3DPrinting #bambu #makingProgress
