People think I'm taken in by contemporary toxic masculinity when I say I want to build my own house These people never saw an English house before

No accident what the official 'British Standards' abbreviate to.

I mean, British Standards (bizarre insistence on ring mains notwithstanding) are pretty spectacular. My boss is a German electrical engineer and he raves about how great British standards are

If only builders would use it I had an electric outlet above the kitchen sink for some reason (I safely plugged it up since)

Incredible, but I can believe that. I can almost picture them with their ruler saying "Well, technically it's not inside the BS-defined splash zone. Wire it up, lads!"

I don't understand, it would have been cheaper and easier not to do it

Lol from the bottom of my heart.

We had the gas meter *right underneath the kitchen sink* in a house built in 1999 As in "will probably be shorted if there's a leak in the sink waste water pipe" underneath

And the gas pipe to the boiler ran along the floor underneath the washing machine and dishwasher When we renovated the kitchen the poor lads were genuinely kind of shocked

I can easily imagine that it's pretty progressive, I only know that my Serbian builder never failed to make this one exact joke about BS having two meanings.

Sorry for your travails. Cowboys hate regulations, this is a cross-border phenomenon. 🙃

Remember under English Building regs, a third of the way through building your own house you have to get pregnant and be visibly close to popping near the end of the project
