If the lower court understood the present moment, this would be its response: "The court is surprised this needs to be said, but anything related to a coup attempt is not an official act. That includes all of the conduct in the indictment. Trial begins September 1st."
Opinion basically comes down to "official actions are immune, unofficial aren't" and the court says that since lower courts have not made a determination on that question, they need to go do that. Beyond me to determine how feasible that is, but absolutely delays the trial.

I think this is the part where I plug my forthcoming book, Living Off the Government?, in which I dedicate a whole chapter to the gendered and racialized politics of non-citizen eligibility for welfare. nyupress.org/978147982858...
There's a whole universe of right-wing mythology that migrants show up and, like "welfare queens" before them, are given a Cadillac and a house. The reality is that our economy requires them, and the effects of deporting them would be akin to simultaneous natural disasters all across the country.

Watching a lawyer in negotiations has taught me that the key to being a lawyer is knowing when to switch between strict legal definitions of things and just what seems obvious/reasonable.

Reading your own book is a real roller coaster of emotions.
I just got the page proofs for my book and it's simultaneously nauseating and the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.

Hey polsky - I'm going to be creating an interdisciplinary course with some business professors called "Business and Public Interest in Democracy." We're looking to cover topics like lobbying, regulatory capture, etc. Anyone have recommended readings or syllabi on courses covering similar topics?

Kevin’s first book will be titled: “It’s actually a lot of effing work to get people to do anything”
My least favorite type of response to problems is when people say "why don't you just go on strike?" as if strikes just materialize when people get annoyed/angry.

I’ve lived in EST my whole life and I wouldn’t have it any other way, even if it means west coast baseball games start when I’m asleep.
Time Zone Rankings 1. MTN - A perfect remove from the tyranny of EST without being alienated (sports start at like 5pm, which rules) 2. PST. Mornings are bad, but you basically dont work after 2pm. 3. EST - A tyrant. But if you're on it you can feel smug. 4. Central - bleh, blah. just be EST already

My kind of bishop.
In a rarity, a US Catholic bishop joined a protest outside the White House today to call for a Gaza ceasefire and urge Biden, a fellow Catholic, to end weapons shipments to Israel. He also voiced support for student protesters, but stressed the need to be peaceful. religionnews.com/2024/05/03/b...

Last day of classes so once again sharing @benschmidt.bsky.social’s incredible tool, which scrapes all of ratemyprofessor and should be shown to students before any evaluations are administered
