If you've not read this already, you're doing election analysis wrong. Read and learn, make the brain big.
I decided to get one of those substack things people have and write about how Labour's victory is a reminder of how party strategy changes in a multi party, volatile environment. There's a bit about the 1977 Dutch election if you like that sort of thing open.substack.com/pub/election...
The coalitionable, inoffensive, Labour Partyopen.substack.com How party strategy in European PR systems can tell us about Labour's victory, and a journey through the weird and wonderful operation of Britain's electoral system.

My older half brother (much older - 70!) is currently half way up Kilimanjaro to raise money for Alzheimer’s society - helping families cope with this devastating condition.Cause close to my heart as my mum suffered with it for many years. The climb is a tribute to her & other lost family members.

Reckon the Lib Dems should get just over £2.2 million in Short Money this Parliament (annually). It was a touch over £1 million annually in the last. Going to be a gear change for the party to have those extra resources.

My extremely sleep-deprived brain rendered the name of the new Labour MP for South-West Norfolk as "Termy Jermy" and now that's his name, he's now termy jermy forever

A couple disconnected thoughts now I've had some more sleep: -British party politics are becoming more Dutch and that is breaking our electoral system -The most under-reported important local election result of the Parliament was the 2023/2024 Independent figure

When an article says "some scientists think" then remember this: I, a scientist, once thought I could fit a whole orange in my mouth. I could, it turns out, get it in there, but I hadn't given sufficient thought to the reverse operation.

If the Lib Dems have in fact won Inverness (we won't know for sure until tomorrow) then they will have exactly nonupled their seats from what they were assumed to have under the new boundaries - 8 goes 9 times into 72.

Feels sensible to simply appoint shadows to their respective portfolios wherever possible. Eases the start of things.

Going to stay up for the last 15 seats. "Were you up for Truss?" feels like the 'Portillo' moments, right?

The bit of the night where a future Prime Minister appears on stage next to someone dressed as Elmo, and someone called "the flying brick" is one of my very favourite bits of British democracy.

The Barnsley North result - swing to Labour in a seat the exit poll said was 99% Reform really nails the point that Reform are underperforming

The BBC coverage is really weak - why are you lingering on interviews, we want results!

Whatever happens tonight, it'll have to work hard to beat the funniest exit poll of my life so far - 2017, where my timeline was just "she's fucked it" for a good 10 minutes
