The cleanout that's in about the right place is 2" PVC with a crossthreaded brass cap around an incredibly corroded galvanized steel bolt. I'm gonna need to cut into the wall to replace the bit of pipe with the cleanout.

Going in through the cleanout under the kitchen sink never really gets to whatever the clog is that's causing the washing machine to flood, but does find an apparently infinite reservoir of smelly black oil not far down.
