Tonight in 1978, the first episode of Douglas Adams’s wildly original radio series “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” was first broadcast on BBC 4 in the United Kingdom. (The first US broadcast was on June 7, 1981, on the @npr.org series Playhouse, where I heard it on Santa Monica station KCRW).

That’s right, the entire enterprise began as an improbable science fiction-comedy radio play, before it was adapted into a series of books, a TV series, and, much later, a movie (sadly, Adams died suddenly and unexpectedly at 49 in 2001). You can listen to the first 12 episodes via the link below.

I read the book and saw the movie (which was horrible). Guess I need to find the radio series. More than one of my reviewers say my H2liftShip saga is similar, but I don't see it. www.h2liftship.com

The broadcast would have been on BBC Radio 4. BBC 4 is a television station, and didn't commence transmissions until much later.
