This image embodies the ignorance often portrayed by right-wing Latter-day Saints who accuse BYU of going “woke.” Natalie Cline—the awful school board member who bullied queer students—accused a professor of neglecting LDS marriage w/a JFS quote…that was actually defending polygamy.
Family of basketball player who was drafted by Utah claims he’s been groomed and brainwashed by his Mormon girlfriend.
All I’m saying is I can’t wait until the inevitable Netflix documentary series.
Each year, Mormon History Association, funded by Smith-Pettit Foundation, sponsors a distinguished scholar whose expertise is outside of Mormonism to speak on Mormonism’s context. This year we’re honored to hear Robert Orsi, who is musing on Mormonism, Catholicism, sexuality, and good/bad religion.
Scholars of Mormonism typically claim that the Book of Mormon served more like a symbol to be invoked than a text to be read. Yet the brilliant historian Janiece Johnson has challenged the concept in recent scholarship, and her MHA plenary demonstrates how engulfed Mormons were in the book.
The Mormon History Association’s annual conference is underway! This year it’s near Kirtland, and the opening plenary featured the LDS Church Historian Kyle McKay discuss the recent acquisition of historic properties.
Warning: my feed may be filled with MHA updates over the next few days.
Staying in an AirBnB located in a Jewish community. Woke up to find this tract at our front door from an evangelical ministry.
Stay classy, Christians.
Very glad to finally get to see the Joseph & Emma home in Kirtland, which the LDS church purchased in 2012, took a decade to research and restore, and open up just a couple years ago.
Capping off American Political History conference w/ brewery plenary w/Elizabeth Hinton, @kevinmkruse.bsky.social, Cecilia Marquez, Joshua Sellers, @jbouie.bsky.social, & Amrita Myers on the 2024 election.
Kudos to @pastpunditry.bsky.social, Leah Rigueur, & Kate Brownell for phenomenal conference!
Really excited for the American Political History Conference to get started with a stellar plenary on “The Courts and American Democracy.”
I also love that the organizers chose the “Cheesecake Factory Menu” size for programs.
Really excited for the American Political History Conference this week at Vanderbilt. The plenary lectures/panels are superb, and there are nonstop solid sessions across the three days.
Ran into a former student at the gym today. He pointed out how ironic it was that I was wearing this shirt.
(He did not do well in my class. He also lifts a lot more weight than me.)
You know what's cool? Supporting history organizations. You know what's also cool? Bigfoot. You know how you can blend both worlds? Order this super cool Journal of Mormon History/Bigfoot t-shirt that Mormon History Association is selling as part of a fundraiser. igiv.org/support/mha2...
Capped off a surprisingly frustrating semester by grading 250 final essays/projects and 250 final exam in one week, not to mention re-grading 100 midterms (long story) and 30 graduate student papers.
Ready for summer. (Just don’t remind me that I’m teaching two online courses.)
SHSU cancelled school today due to the massive rainstorm this morning, despite 1) it was forecast to clear up by late-morning and 2) it’s the last full day of classes, so crucial for final projects and exams.
Glad we could save students from this disaster zone!
Every time I teach the second half of the US survey, I frame my final lecture around a recent event that ties together threads that were featured throughout the semester.
These will be the images with which I open tomorrow’s class. I hate that this history remains so relevant.
The news that many of us have been dreading arrived this morning: Melissa Inouye passed after her long fight with cancer. Words can’t capture the devastation this brings, but here are some words nonetheless.
I’m at a conference in St George, Utah, and decided to take a risk with an AirBnB outside the city near the red rocks.
I’d say it paid off with this morning’s sunrise.
