I don’t wish to crassly promote my work in the wake of serious allegations against a beloved creator; but I will say that the graphic novel I’m about to launch a crowdfund for is written about exactly this sort of thing. It’s about having heroes and what do you do when they turn out to be awful.
Is the thing you do when they are awful at least adjacent to "throw them in the river"? I am ok with you having to withhold that information until book release. Delayed gratification is sometimes necessary.

Personally I just found out yesterday about Bertolt Brecht, a “heroic” writer that I looked up to in my teens.
For most of my adult life, I had no idea that most of his plays were written by invisible women that he manipulated and plagiarized.
