Antisemitism is a legitimate concern and I've been cautious in framing my own feelings. But the degree to which people are bending over backwards to protect Israel from a sticker, with no mention of the horrors being committed in Palestine, is frankly disgusting.
Right as SdJ demonstrate how games can be a social force for good they immediately put their foot in their mouth and show how wholly unprepared the hobby is to have any serious political discussion, as if games can only be a frivolity divorced from the humanity of those who make and play them.

There's a lot of crowdfunding projects to be excited about now. This episode I run through a few I'm excited about, give into the astonishment of hype with my initial impressions on Arcs and my closing thoughts on finishing Lords of the Fallen.
📣The latest episode is here 🎧 This week on The Playlist we discuss the fresh batch of Spiel Des Jahres winners, along with a selection of hot new crowdfunding projects and the latest games we’ve been playing.

Just heard Kennerspiel winner Matteo Menapace, whose Daybreak, about taking action to fight climate change, might be the most overtly political game to win an SdJ award, was banned from future SdJ events for wearing a sticker in support of Palestine. Shame on the SdJ. Absolutely ridiculous.

I can't stop thinking about how Flintlock really feels like a *game*, with all the friction of constraints and limitations of the medium without concerning itself with fidelity and immersive experiences. It's just fun to play.

Enjoyed the Chants of Sennaar chat and about to wrap it myself. Regarding recommendations, have y'all played Return of the Obra Dinn - very similar style of deduction and aesthetic but with more murder. Heaven's Vault and Case of the Golden Idol keep coming up and I'll likely be trying next.

This is doubly frustrating when paired with Humble Bundle flooded with cheap AI asset packs. Sad to see yet another valued institution, that did so much good for charity, harvested for parts by venture capitalist vultures.

I'd not bought one in a while but had assumed as much. They'll let it coast on good will until the charity tax cuts dry up.

Looks like Sticker Mule is still panicking, but more importantly: They're still emailing people who have explicitly unsubscribed from their newsletter. If that's you, you can report every email you receive after unsubscribing to Gmail as Spam, and to the FTC here. reportfraud.ftc.gov/assistant

I can't say whether SdJ would have acted differently, but there still would've been plenty of people upset and willing to equate any acknowledgement of Palestine as antisemitic (or just upset that there's any politics in games)

Was looking forward to this but zoom is not cooperating with my phone. Will have to catch up on it later.

Very useful context, it's hard to decipher nuanced intention between coded symbology and Germany's culture, but still hard to view this as anything other than reactionary, shutting out all conversation on the matter.

This counts doubly for Ziff Davis getting bored with Humble the moment it stops spitting out candy
These tech conglomerates are chewing up and spitting out journalism outlets with all the care and attention of a bored toddler with a fruit salad. Except even the toddler has more empathy than these scumbags.

Have been on a reading tear lately and just burned through Babel like a fire through a library. A captivating subversion of magic school wonder through the lens of empire and resistance and a great companion to City of Last Chances

I've seen them a couple time previously, seeing The Tain performed in it's entirety is a top five moment. I didn't love their last couple albums but I'm sure it'll be a good time regardless.

I've not been to a live show in 5 years (since the childless days) but just realized that having family in town means wife and I get to go to the Decemberists show next week!

Like a true trash viking, I found an old bottle of mead while cleaning. In shame of not drinking it during our Feast for Odin podcast, I'm making up for it on this week's @omnigamers.bsky.social Playlist.
