When I was a kid I was a stupid little assface bastard who genuinely believed billionaires and Supreme Court justices had to be smarter than the average guy working at a gas station

none of those people could work at the gas station

The Internet and social media have been the single most powerful thing to dispel that notion. Having a direct window into the empty mind palaces of these people has been amazing.

I assumed anyone who was a lawyer or judge had to be very intelligent even if their motives were impure but NOPE! turns out many (if not most) of them are as dumb as rocks

the one upside of being raised by lawyers who had clerkships is never buying into that and knowing all judges are dumb as hell

One of the reasons I went back for my PhD is I started hanging out with them at work and realized they weren't that bright.

I believed it until I became a lawyer and learned that: - Lawyers aren't that smart, they are just good at a few specific things; - The best lawyers do not become judges; - Judges are treated like they know things but usually have 0 expertise in the things they are deciding.

I am ashamed to say I thought this of presidents until W.

I remember when we learned about the Supreme Court that it was commented on that any of us in class was technically eligible because they don't have age or qualification restrictions, but that would never happen because no president would ever be so irresponsible.

The fiction tv show 'Warehouse 13'. Said warehouse has international influence and one of the people in upper management is also a waitress. I thought that made sense.
