That time Curt Swan drew Superman for the House of Ideas…

And, as I recall, José Luis García-López drew Wonder Man, for similar reasons.

Indeed! (And here’s the page for those who haven’t seen it)

I think he doesn’t see well out of those ionic eyes.
Avatar
I mean, Wonder Man never had the greatest track record for costumes.

Okay, I'm just going to say it, I loved it at the time and I still do:

That’s one of the good costumes. As I understand it, it was intended as street clothes, originally, but the colorist didn’t know that. So they colored it bright red and blue and a costume was born.

The closest he gets to a good one, and he still looks like a park flasher who fell down a vat of red dye.

Get a load of this guys Roger Kaputnik-ass jacket!
Avatar
No, but the one time he gets drawn by JLGL, it’s a shame it’s the single worst costume he ever had. García-López makes it look as good as it possibly can, at least.
Avatar
I wish those had credits on the pics like Who’s Who had.
Avatar
They had them on one of the inside covers, if I recall correctly.
Avatar
They did. DC put them on each individual page though. Made it easier to see who did what. One of the rare times I prefer DC over Marvel. Haha

He looks so happy that he stole Wonder Woman’s bracelets. Thanksgiving must be tense over at the Wonder family house.

Two Superman artists drawing two Superman-like characters. It’s a reference more than a joke, but it had to be arranged with DC, since Swan and García-López were under contract. So Marvel wasn’t going to waste the opportunity having them draw the Living Laser or Tomazooma.
Avatar
Ah to live in the timeline where JLGL drew 25 issues of THE UNBELIEVABLE TOMAZOOMA...
Avatar
👍 makes sense. i chuckled at the Swan one back in the day, just didn't particularly associate JLGL with specific characters (or WM with Supes)
Avatar
I am pretty sure I didn't get the joke behind this at the time.
Avatar
I didn't realize that was Curt Swan,

For bonus points, the "taken from the comics" panel below it was Byrne, who did Man of Steel around that time.
Avatar
Me either. Man, that's wild. Wylie-d? I bet he had fun doing it.

It's funny how everyone at Marvel treated Gladiator as Marvel's Superman. There wasn't even an attempt to hide it or be sneaky about it. Byrne was on the verge of becoming the #1 Superman guy and did a story about how Gladiator's (and therefore, Superman's) power works (Psionics!)
Avatar
Since the Imperial Guard were thinly veiled Legion analogues wouldn’t he be Superboy? Or even Mon-El?
Avatar
Avatar
You’d think that, but Byrne and Simonson both treated him as basically Superman.
I swear... If Feige hires Cavill to be Gladiator...
Avatar
I'm all for that kind of "stunt" casting in the MCU for like Squadron Supreme or similar. If not that then if Gunn wants to do Crime Syndicate get people who played the heroes to now play the doppelgangers. But honestly... I think Cavill should play Doom. Specifically Kirby's Doom who has the scar.
Avatar
That was such a great in-joke
Avatar
The best joke would have been Marvel releasing a Swan GLADIATOR mini to compete with Byrne's MAN OF STEEL. Inked by Austin or Layton.

Vulnerable to what?! The crushing void of being unloved?!

It took me way too long to figure out how he was a Superboy analogue when I was younger

I’m sure he’s fine despite having a BMI of 66.8
