A treasure trove of recommendations from old short lists and an award I wasnt formerly aware of to keep an eye on. thank you! I'm off to read some Jenn Lyons.
Extended SFF nerd posting coming in so if that's not what you're here for feel free to mute this thread. Pretty sure the Hugos will retain the prestige they have in SFF fandom in future, but the clusterfuck with the vote count is an opportunity to look at other awards as a potential sign of quality

Chorus of dragons is so great. Super strong characterisation, fun with timelines. Footnotes in fiction. And strong epic fantasy plotting that goes quite different places than the tropes might have you expect.

I was on the hunt for my next big series read and this might just be it! I am very excited! (In exchange, I finished the Doctrine of Labyrinths trilogy by Katherine Addison recently and it's dark but understands trauma SO well. So I would recommend)

Hah I read those back on original release when she was writing as Sarah monette. Enjoyed them! (though my favourite of hers is still the Cemeteries of Amalo; Celehar is the most likeable sad sack in fiction).

Celehar is my boy and I would fight God for him. Immediately clocked onto him in Goblin Emperor (yes I have a type, why do you ask) and was beyond delighted when the announcement for the spin off came

Have you read Melissa Scott's Points books? Not as glum as Celehar but Nico has similar "thoroughly good man in a slightly indifferent system solves mysteries in fantasy city and also is gay" vibes. And the worldbuilding is superb.
