As someone from a country that does not have juries at all the whole jury thing is both fascinating and horrifying.

Apparently! That's unusual; generally defendants can leave and get a sandwich or something, as long as they're close enough to run back on short notice. @mitchellepner.bsky.social thinks it's because of the security issues with getting Trump in/out of the courthouse.
