I'm incredibly bullish on America's future. I get it's a bit hard to see these days--the death throes of unpopular authoritarianism is pretty scary and there are real problems in the immediate term--but I definitely think America's best days are still very much ahead.

leaving the movies and seeing fireworks as just a thing on the walk to the train are now my favorite nyc fireworks in fifteen years here

Hi! Are you outside today, celebrating the day off despite the incredible amount of chaos in the world right now? Please drink a lot of water, reapply sunscreen, and wear a hat. Max loves you.

This Fourth of July, I urge you all to throw caution to the wind and put two (2) mighty spoonfuls of jarred Calabrian chili peppers into your pasta salads. Show your cookout peeps what pasta salad can really do!

Went to the Naturalization ceremony in downtown Northampton today because my kid wanted to go & it was wonderful.

sitting on the beach listening to three separate and distinct music vibes from three different gatherings. I wonder if we’ll get up to four!! (to be clear I love it, and humans having fun in general)

Anyway, if anyone wants book recommendations right now, tell me 2 writers you love & what you’re in the mood for.
Finally read S. A. Cosby’s Blacktop Wasteland and it’s so fucking good. Oyeyemi’s Parasol Against the Axe is weird & gorgeous. Spufford’s Light Perpetual is everything I wanted it to be. Buehlman’s The Daughter’s War broke my heart. Craft: Stories I Wrote for the Devil by Lima is a wicked delight.

Not to be corny but I do think the ongoing aspiration to make America a pluralist democracy of equals is righteous, beautiful, and worth honoring, even if it has more often been the struggle of minorities & dissenters than the policy of the government. 🇺🇸

A poundcake I made in 2016 for a July 4th party. I made a lavender glaze to stick the all edible flowers on it. New Yorkers: you can find the flowers at a vendor at Union Square green market on Saturdays.

I have a question that might be silly I know folks who are deeply socially anxious or have other stuff going on that forecloses going out into the neighborhood/developing traditional community ties, and are skeptical when I say everyone has some way they can contribute How can they help organize?

It’s made me very happy to see a “Protect Trans Kids” shirt at my hometown’s July 4 parade, real Americans support trans rights 🇺🇸

For some reason, my 6 year old uses a pickle as her standard unit of measurement. Even for things that aren't pickle-based. Wow, she's quicker than a pickle! He's stronger than a pickle! Gotta be smarter than a pickle! Is there a sentient pickle hero I don't know about?

Yes I ended my talk with a poetry reading. I send this poem to my parents every 4th of July. Here it is in full if you've never read it: poets.org/poem/let-ame...
In my early career award lecture at AERA last weekend, I ended my talk with a reading of an excerpt from Let America Be America Again

This is exactly where I’ve been for the past few days—though I had a helpful conversation with someone here last night that reassured me that a switch from Biden to Harris presents as many opportunities as risks. So I’m feeling a little better about the world today.
Not that anyone is asking me, but I have no idea what the Democrats should do right now. All the options seem bad, and there isn’t one that seems less bad than the others. And as a professional opinion-haver, it’s disorienting to have no strong opinion about something so enormously consequential.
