This isn’t cat related, sorry, but I’m so excited that the trilliums are blooming. I am crazy about spring wildflowers, the trilliums are my favorite, and I know a spot where there are THOUSANDS of white ones. It’s hard to capture in photos but it’s just so beautiful.

There are only about 10 or 15 red ones in this whole big section of forest. It’s one huge patch of white ones after another like nature just decided this was going to be a giant wedding venue. I look forward to this every year. Just gorgeous! 🌸

Here (Oregon) the trilliums start white and fade to red/purple as they mature and die. Do these stay white??

They turn a light pink as they pass away. I only saw a few in that state today - we've been checking almost daily to catch this peak.

They change color as they are pollinated. By specialist ants.

Well, yes. These ones turn pink as they age but that's not what I mean. I'm talking about red trilliums - different species. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trilliu...

That's astonishing and beautiful

In the back of my brain, I knew those were trillium! Community college html course stuck with me.

Red flowers? Mixed in?

Yes. They're saying there are a few red trilliums in this big patch of white ones. I've yet to see a red one in person, but have seen white and purple-pink. I love them all 😊

Our local trillium (Trillium ovatum, western wake robin) changes from white to pink to purple as seeds develop. The white ones are virgins.

So it must be new in that area. Are there other areas that are purple primarily?

I've seen a few purplish ones that weren't even open yet. Maybe little mutants with the purple gene activated early?

I don't know for sure, but I'd guess that different species may have different color variations. Our local species lives in redwood forests and likes to set root in/on decaying fallen logs. It looks like there may be some not-as-rainy weather next week; I need to go hiking while they are prolific.

That could be true too! I was wondering if that variety could primarily dominate a certain region and vary in color. And then I wondered if N to S or W to E.

Thank you for sharing - I’ve never seen them! So interesting! (And beautiful!)

It's more of a burgandy.
