This isn’t cat related, sorry, but I’m so excited that the trilliums are blooming. I am crazy about spring wildflowers, the trilliums are my favorite, and I know a spot where there are THOUSANDS of white ones. It’s hard to capture in photos but it’s just so beautiful.
Avatar
There are only about 10 or 15 red ones in this whole big section of forest. It’s one huge patch of white ones after another like nature just decided this was going to be a giant wedding venue. I look forward to this every year. Just gorgeous! 🌸

Here (Oregon) the trilliums start white and fade to red/purple as they mature and die. Do these stay white??
Avatar
They turn a light pink as they pass away. I only saw a few in that state today - we've been checking almost daily to catch this peak.

They change color as they are pollinated. By specialist ants.
Avatar
Well, yes. These ones turn pink as they age but that's not what I mean. I'm talking about red trilliums - different species. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trilliu...
Trillium erectum - Wikipediaen.wikipedia.org

That's astonishing and beautiful

In the back of my brain, I knew those were trillium! Community college html course stuck with me.

Red flowers? Mixed in?
Avatar
Yes. They're saying there are a few red trilliums in this big patch of white ones. I've yet to see a red one in person, but have seen white and purple-pink. I love them all 😊
Avatar
Our local trillium (Trillium ovatum, western wake robin) changes from white to pink to purple as seeds develop. The white ones are virgins.
Avatar
So it must be new in that area. Are there other areas that are purple primarily?
Avatar
I've seen a few purplish ones that weren't even open yet. Maybe little mutants with the purple gene activated early?
Avatar
I don't know for sure, but I'd guess that different species may have different color variations. Our local species lives in redwood forests and likes to set root in/on decaying fallen logs. It looks like there may be some not-as-rainy weather next week; I need to go hiking while they are prolific.

Thank you for sharing - I’ve never seen them! So interesting! (And beautiful!)

It's more of a burgandy.

Spring in VT is the best! I found all these on my run today

I love the early spring ephemerals so much. They are so delicate and tiny but also tough as nails to push through the earth and start blooming in sub-freezing temps!

The painted trillium is flowering here but nothing as spectacular as those.
Avatar
Beautiful! I don't see those very often so it's very special. ☺️

Avatar
Thousands!!?!! That’s stunning! 🤩
Avatar
I love sharing photos but never tell anyone the exact location. Trying to keep them safe from trampling and picking. 🤫
Avatar
Yeah, the trampling is a nightmare and a tragedy. Luckily people at the parks in Oregon (and around the college campuses where the grounds have ‘em) folks seemed to be getting more comfortable yelling at at people for not sticking to the trail.
Avatar
Like, 7 godamn years of recovery. We owe to to each other not to fuck that up.
Avatar
An excellent plan. Must protect the fragile things
Avatar
Thank you, thank you, thank you for protecting them. Too many people fail to understand that we should never, ever pick a trillium.
Avatar
Thanks for not sharing the secret location so they stay safe and beautiful!
Avatar
I grew up in a state where the Trillium is the state flower. I've never seen this many trillium in one place!
Avatar
There are so many. There’s no good way to photograph them to get how they look in person but you can zoom on this panorama shot I took to see more.
Avatar
If kind of funny that, just like here, there's a carpet of maple seedlings under all the trillium. They produced so many seeds this year.
Avatar
Glorious! I’ve never seen so many. is there a scent?
Avatar
They are supposed to have an unpleasant odor but I've never noticed it. I think you have to stick your nose right in it? 🤷‍♀️
Avatar
I've noticed the odor of red trilliums before, but IMHO it's no worse than plenty of other common ornamentals and herbs. Live catnip plants smell far worse to me.

My seckel pear tree remains the absolute worst

I got excited when I found one growing on the edge of my yard, that is amazing!
Avatar
It looks like the set of the wizard of oz.

Oregon trillium says hi
Avatar
My PIC from last year, got to take some more this year. Beautiful plants (just don't pick them if you're in Ontario)
Avatar
Ontario's provincial flower I've seen them growing wild a few times.
Avatar
It’s been several weeks here. They’re gone but not forgotten :)
Avatar
HA, I had to check your profile really quickly to see if you're in Ontario, lol. Beautiful 🙂
