I feel Brown is 100% correct. Chasing the mythical moderate has sunk Democratic candidates for the past 20 years at least. From John Kerry, to the Senators who waffled on the ACA (Landrieu, Nelson, etc.) to Hillary Clinton.
Claire McCaskill in Missouri in 2018 is a perfect example - during her reelection campaign she threw her Democratic base in the St. Louis area under the bus in an attempt to reach out to moderate voters and under-performed Democrats across the state, leading to Hawley's election
