I suspect this is what happened to J*** M*W*****, who started out two decades ago as a very talented pop linguistics writer and is now mainly an insufferable culture wars asshole.

A thing with linguistics is that many verifiably true things in the field seem counterintuitive to the point of being almost offensive to non-linguists, including professionals in nearby fields. This often drives linguists into a state of frustration and resentment and some of them go a bit strange.
