The #18thc enthusiasm for having useful information ready to hand knew no bounds. Here's a printed handkerchief that records around its edges the going rates in London for hackney cabs, hackney chairs, & Thames watermen, & the distances between principal cities in Britain. Who needs a smartphone?

Let’s boost this again. You will need photo ID to vote in a UK election because the Conservatives have tried to minimise the defeat they robustly deserve. Get it free from the link below.
Poll card arrived for local elections in May. Seems like a good time to remind folks in the UK that you'll need photo ID to vote this year. If you don't have the passport or photo driving licence you can get it free via local council or here: www.electoralcommission.org.uk/voting-and-e...
Voter IDwww.electoralcommission.org.uk There is a new requirement to take photo ID to some elections in England, Scotland and Wales.

I am very fortunate to have read much of this brilliant and beautiful new book by my colleague, @chloewigstonsmith.bsky.social already. And now US readers can do so too. This book is a field changer and anyone working on gender, material culture or the transatlantic 18th century should read this!

So I have a publication coming out tomorrow! Routledge is releasing the new Companion to the Eighteenth Century Literatures in English and I co-authored a chapter with @zugenia.bsky.social called “The Problem of Indigeneity”.

Now would be a good time for someone like @propublica.bsky.social to ask this small, entrenched set of consultants how much public money they've made by advising drastic cuts to public Universities over the past few years?

I’m so grateful for this brilliant piece, which I read with a great deal of recognition, despite not working in history.
I wrote something: “Male Historians Explain Things To Me: masculinity, expertise and the academy”. With a huge debt to Rebecca Solnit, Sara Ahmed, Siri Hustvedt, Professor Lucy Robinson and many other feminists before me. www.manchesterhive.com/display/9781...

Last week I attended the opening of the Inspired by Italy show at #18th c Beningbrough Hall. Literature students at York contributed brilliant creative responses and magnetic poetry prompts to Kate Somervell’s photographs of Venice. A real treat to see their work in such a gorgeous exhibition!

Despite trying to set my desk on fire this morning through a misjudged attempt at self care, I have now submitted my proofs!
This morning I lit a candle at my desk and then proceeded to set fire to a page of my book proofs. Happy Tuesday morning to me!

If you happen to have a teenage child, do not under any circumstance show them your book acknowledgements, thinking it will be a heartfelt moment between parent and child. Trust me.
