At least we know where JD Vance stands on the fascism debate.

JD Vance lied to the American people. He called his book an "elegy." It's not an elegy. If Dems were smart, they would harp on this point relentlessly in order to win over the all-important "pedantic English major" demographic.

How can we expect the American public to understand the claim that “Trump is a fascist” or “Trump is an authoritarian” when modern European history has basically been eliminated as a hiring field in the academy?

Higher Ed Cuts update: in 6 weeks since I shared the spreadsheet, 20 more colleges & universities have been added: a total of 126 institutions closing, laying off staff, eliminating programs in the last 10 months. Thanks to those who have written to me with updates. Let me know what I've missed.
Update on the grim US Higher Ed Cuts spreadsheet: it now lists 106 colleges & universities announcing closure, layoffs, hiring freezes, program eliminations, etc. since summer 2023. Thanks to many colleagues who sent information, sources, additions, edits. If you'd like a copy, send me an email.

The Hamilton Center hired a ton of TT historians but they don't have or offer any majors yet, and won't until August 2025. They clearly realize that you can and should hire talented historians on the basis of their research alone. A good lesson for the rest of us. news.ufl.edu/2024/05/hami...

I have it on very good authority that very rich, very wealthy private SLACs that could certainly afford to hire a lot of TT faculty in the humanities are just choosing not to and shifting their lines to data science & other such profit-oriented STEM fields.
The Hamilton Center at the University of Florida has hired a bunch of phenomenal historians who absolutely deserved tenure track jobs. But it is depressing to imagine that the humanities will only survive in ideologically right-wing enclaves like Hamilton news.ufl.edu/2024/05/hami...

Gee is barfing up the rightwing/neoliberal line: the humanities are so mucked up by all that "theory" that they no longer are "liberal."

At least 2 Columbia students and 1 Barnard student sued the university in housing court to gain access to their dorms and remove their belongings. The suits claim that Columbia violated NY law by disregarding standard eviction process. The university has since settled at least 2 of the 3 claims.

This sort of reporting has been badly needed. If you wonder why univ presidents behave in seemingly irrational ways, the answer may be that they are evaluated based on ability to attract donations and the pressures from that quarter are mostly not public. www.nytimes.com/2024/05/10/u...

Hello @bsky.app, I hear that you’re planning to introduce DMs. Please give us the option to not be DM-able. I really hate DMs. Users should be able to not receive them. For some of us, they can be the source of a lot of harassment.

I sent this message to the UMass administration yesterday: "I was looking forward to speaking next week at UMass Amherst. I visited two years ago and everyone was awesome. My nephew graduated from there and got a great education. But calling the cops on peaceful protesters is a shameful act...” 1/2
