6/16/24 - Went to a cartoonist mixer behind the Books With Pictures store. Nice to see some faces I haven't seen in ages and catch up, as well as to meet new folk.

6/14/24 - After a morning walk to the store for groceries, I had a lovely phone conversation with Agnew, where she helped me piece through the comments from my agent about my novel, and options for where to go with them. And then it was back to drawing!

6/14/24 - talked with my agent about my romance/fantasy/comedy novel. He had encouraging and solid comments, but it can still be hard to have someone NOT say, "sonny-boy, this is gonna be a hit, we’re gonna make you a star!” (although I'd also be surprised/suspicious if someone DID say that)

6/13/24 - Sleepy from the late-night freelance, I worked from home. I've been avoiding doing laundry because of being unsure some of the dynamics in the shared house/AirBnB I'm at, so I finally just bit the bullet and did it. Is there little else which smells as nice as clean warm laundry?

6/12/24 - Finishing a freelance job took MUCH longer than I scheduled for, so I was up 5 hours past bedtime to finish. But it looks good. Now I'm reflecting on how unfocused I've been on this trip. Good for rose smelling, not so good for a reasonable sleep schedule. Time to get it together, Baldwin!

6/10/24 - I feel like I'm walking in a novel. On my walk home, I stoped by H Mart (which I only know about because of the lovely novel "Crying in H Mart") to see if they had dorayaki (which I only know about because of the lovely novel "Sweet Bean Paste"). They did. They were delicious.

6/10/03 - I got in town a week ago and started working at a desk in Helioscope studios on Tuesday, a shared workplace some cartoonists I know set up. Which was the point of my trip -- to be around my peers! And after a week of adjusting to being here, I finally started REALLY getting some work done.

6/2/24 - In the morning, my sister and I hiked to Faery Falls, steep but not very long. So much spring runoff, beautiful. Since I'll leave on Monday, we had a farewell lunch on Sunday of eggs and potatoes and fresh muffins. Later my sister and I played the “Trekking the National Parks” board game.

6/1/24 - after strolling the Dunsmuir Botanical Gardens, my sister, Lemony, and I had lunch at the Wheelhouse. We then checked out the art at the Siskiyou Arts Museum (quilt exhibit and photography exhibit). Later I introduced the show “Laid Back Camp” to my sister.

05/31/24 - After non-stop social visits for over a week I was feeling tapped out and so I asked my sister if I could just shut myself in the guest room and work all day. Felt really good - drawing, corresponding, breathing. And then we had tofu and veggies with peanut sauce for dinner. Yay!
Avatar
05/30/24 - My sister and I hiked along Yet Atwam Creek in McCloud, mostly talking about books, and then made lunch at home and worked a bit before going with Lemony to the Garden Tap at Native Grounds Nursery for pizza. Later, at home, we had a long talk about internal family systems. Fun!

5/29/24 - my sister & I went to the post office, grocery, & then for a hike along the shore of Lake Siskiyou, talking about family, life, & retirement. I pressed the button that activated the animatronic bear, which was loud. Then we worked some before stuffed mushrooms for dinner with Lemony. Yum!

5/28/24 - After breakfast and morning goodbyes, I left for Mt Shasta, arriving in the early afternoon at my sister and Lemony's house. She and I caught up on the back porch (chilly!) until he was done with work, and then we had Mexican for dinner. So good to see them.

5/27/24 - Anne and I went for a beautiful hike, ending up on Limantour beach. On the drive back we stopped at Palace Market in Point Reyes Station for Buffalo milk soft serve ice cream. Delicious! Later, after BBQ leftovers, of course we played Clank! Again. (I also ate an entire box of truffles)

5/26/24 - Alice and I walked to Gilroy Donut House, and then I drove to San Rafael (I rerouted over the Golden Gate Bridge due to an accident on the Richmond bridge) to visit Anne and Dean and their cat Mr Lonelyhearts. We had an enormous BBQ and then played “Clank!” And laughed until late.

5/25/24 - Alice’s housemate Reba cut my hair (and made cinnamon raisin bread french toast), both things so renewing! Then Alice, Rick, Lina, and I went for pizza at the Pizza Series in Scott’s Valley and then hiked (too far! So tired!) in Henry Cowell Redwoods S.P.

5/24/24 - Alice and I went to Stanford to see a small art show about manga/anime and religion as well as other art including the Rodin sculptures. Then we met up with Rick and Lina and we went into the city, and after dinner at Rad Radish, went and saw the Dave Holland New Quartet at SF Jazz.

5/23/24 - after a morning of writing a couple letters, I went with Alice for a long walk to do errands and then walk along the levee. Once home, after breakfast-for-dinner, we had some AMAZING vegan GF chocolate cake she made to celebrate some great news she received.

Had a long morning of an early walk to the ocean, breakfast, re-packing the car. Then a beautiful drive up to Gilroy, stopping at the library in Paso Robles work a little. Then I met my old friend Alice from high school and we got delicious Mexican food and then beers. So good.

San Simeon SP/Wasburn campground in California was good to me.

5/21/24 - during an early morning walk before breakfast, after crossing paths for the 2nd time, a woman asked me what my contemplative thoughts were. We talked for 2 hours. After several upheavals in her life, she had moved west to go From Buddhist center to Buddhist ctr, to figure out her path. 1/2

5/20/24 - A 9.5 hour drive ended up being 12. But I’m glad I didn’t go with the first plan of camping north of the Salton Sea, u could barely see through the dust because of all the wind. Plus I really wanted to see the ocean (will walk along it in the morn, rather than just seeing it from the car)

Visiting an old friend from high school in Phoenix. Haven’t been here for ages. And by luck, I arrived when the saguaro cacti are in bloom. Just beautiful. On the same drive, years ago, I also was this lucky, and took photos and did a painting of it. Happy memories.

Rollerskating Friday evening, and skiing/hiking Saturday. So much fun, but my legs are so tired!

Cartoonists out there. I'm adding "alt text" descriptions to my comics on Patreon, but it looks like one can only use 140 characters. Not enough for a comic. Best workarounds?

I don't want this thread to be languishing at the old place, so: 11 IDEAS FOR ENLIVENING A COMICS PAGE. Some pages will just lay there, not engaging you. And if you're not engaged, the reader won't be either. Let’s talk about ways to solve that problem as artists. 🧵

I hurt my toe (slowly improving), so I haven’t been able to do my morning walks this week. And now my phone “health” app is shaming me for my low step count. Thanks, app.
